About the book: "The Blessed Hajj” is a book that enables Muslim children to gain, love and have knowledge about one of the beautiful pillars of Islam; Hajj. It is written in a poetic form which is easy to read and understand for children. Finally, "The Blessed Hajj" brings the pilgrimage journey to Muslim children's homes. The Blessed Hajj is geared at children between 3 and 7 of age.

The author shared her reasons for authoring The Blessed Hajj.

1. Why did you decide to author The Blessed Hajj ?

I felt the need of creating a simple and beautiful book about hajj for kids. I felt like most of the books that are out there target older kids and are very difficult to understand.

I wanted something catchy and easy for kids to remember things about hajj. So, I wrote the book in a rhyming form. When I read it to my five-year-old, he was super excited and even memorized some sentences from the book very quickly.

2. What do you want to achieve with this children's book?

I want to contribute to the ummah. I want to contribute to Islam and little children to learn about hajj in a fun way.

3. Please tell us about yourself.

I'm a stay at home Mom, homeschooler, graphic designer and artist. I love teaching and creating educational materials for children. I want to contribute to my beautiful deen in whatever way I can bithnillahi.

I'm a convert to Islam for many years now alhamdulillah. I speak Russian and English. I am also working on creating Russian Islamic books for children, too.

About the author:

Anastasia Aisha Izgagina used to run the online magazine My Muslim Veil for ten years before dedicating her full attention to motherhood and homeschooling. Izgagina is also a certified Montessori teacher and is currently pursuing her Islamic degree in childhood education. Also a graphic designer, Izgagina enjoys creating Muslim artwork.

About the book: “Superheroes of Islam” is a book series that portrays the lives of past Muslim Heroes through the lenses of a young author. The book series intends to teach and give children a sense of pride in Islamic Heritage and use the lives of the Rightly Guided Leaders and Sahabas as an example of true heroes to follow. The first book of the series reveals a little bit about the life of the first Khalifa, and the lessons we should learn from his life.

We had a chance to talk to the young entrepreneur, and he shared his motives with us alhamdullilah.

Question 1: Why did you decide to author the series "Superheroes of Islam" Book 1 ?

Ammar Kidwai: I wanted young Muslims to learn about the Sahabas in a fun way. I also wanted them to get excited while learning about the real heroes.

Question 2: What else do you want to achieve with this children's book?

Ammar Kidwai: I want my little brothers to be inspired by this book as well as everyone else in the world.

About the book: Dawood loves his books a lot. One day, he comes across a book unlike any other he has seen and is intrigued. When he asks his mom about it, he discovers interesting facts about the Book, explores all the things it talks about, finds out why it’s so special, and learns about the Speaker of the Book too. Dawood Loves His Books introduces children to the concept of the Qur'an, the role it plays in the life of a Muslim, the things that Allah has talked about in it, and also gives a description of Allah Himself using Surah al-Ikhlas as a base—everything a child would need to know about the Qur'an and Allah in the early years of his life!

The rhyme scheme of the story makes it pleasant on little ears, and easy for little minds to follow.

1. Why did you decide to write Dawood Loves His Books ?

There's an interesting backstory actually. 'Dawood' is the name of my nephew. When he was around 7 years old, he couldn't muster up an interest in reading. There was one day when he made a huge fuss to do his schoolwork because he needed to read. Seeing all of this, I had wanted to encourage him to develop an interest in reading and so I penned a short poem called 'Dawood Loves to Read'.

Whether or not it helped my dear nephew then, this poem sparked something within me and I decided to turn it into something that would be beneficial to the kids of the Ummah at large. That is when 'Dawood Loves His Books' came to be.

P.S. My nephew does enjoy reading now. He loves his comics--an enjoyable balance of text and images. May Allah bless him.

2. What do you want to achieve with this children's book?

As parents, teachers, and caretakers, we wish to educate our children about Allah and Islam right from their early years. We strive to have their foundational years strengthened with the love of Islam.

Our toddlers may know of the Qur'an when they see us reciting it or when we teach them surahs, but do they know about its message? Do they know what Allah wants to tell us through it? Do they understand that the Qur'an is Allah speaking to them directly?

I would like for this book to:

• introduce the concept of the Qur'an to kids as small as 3-4 years old;

• to make them aware of the message in it; and

• to teach the very basic things they'd need to know about their Creator at that age; all in simple rhyme-style accompanied by bright colorful illustrations.

Why rhyme?

Young children respond to rhyme superbly.

They absorb the ideas easier; they can recall the words (and thus, the message in it) quicker; and they have fun anticipating the ending of the lines.

I hope that when children read/listen to this book they realize how special the Qur'an is, and why it is so important in our lives.

I hope they understand that even though the surahs they've memorized or have heard the grown-ups reciting are in Arabic (a language they may not know), it has a beautiful message that can be clearly understood and implemented in life.

I hope they get to learn a bit more about the One who gave them life and everything else in it.

Ultimately, I hope that this book sows a seed of love in their hearts for their Creator and His Book.

1. Why did you decide to co-author What Am I? Book2 ?

After receiving a copy of WHAT AM I? Book 1, which coincided with the birth of my first grandchild, author Papatya and I ended up discussing my grand’s varied background.  She suggested it would be a fascinating addition to her series. I was a bit skeptical, until she sent a draft prompting me to fill in the details and completing the story. In the process of explaining the intricacies of the people and cultures that came together to ‘make’ this child, I became a believer in the project. I never knew how many decisions and work it takes to put together a children’s book. It was an eye opening learning experience.

2. What do you want to achieve with this children's book?

I would like the children who read this to realize that all of us have a varied and interesting family history. As we know, there’s already a huge interest in ancestry  mostly among adults. I’m hoping this book will intrigue children to become interested in their current and past ancestors. I hope they ask their elders questions about their childhoods, memories, distance relatives etc. The research could go beyond ethnic or racial connections too. I’d like children (and adults) to realize that all of us—as different as we can be—are ultimately connected and worthy.  After all, God thought enough of each and every one of us to say “BE!”

Who Could I Be? Through the book, children will learn about animals and their distinctive features, and the repetitive use of questioning encourages them to use the clues to keep guessing and wanting to turn the page to find out what animal it is. Most importantly, it sheds light on and promotes the beauty of our Creator’s creations. 

Kamillah the Butterfly : Kamillah is a caterpillar who is struggling to understand life’s changes. With a friend by her side and discovering a beautiful surprise at the end of her cycle, she happily accepts the biggest change. A lovely book any child can relate too. It will definitely leave little ones wanting to read it repeatedly.

When asked what motivated her to write these creative children's stories, Khanom said, "When I had my first child, I started investing in a home library. That's when I realised there was a lack of books for Muslim children that are fun and engaging. I then had an idea for a story and almost dreamed about how great it would be if there was good, quality picture books for Muslims that looked and read like the mainstream books."

Born and raised in London, children’s author Shoohada was surrounded by love early on, part of a large family and a friend to many. She left her formal education on hold when she was 16, taking a job in retail, and three years later, she had moved up into the management team.
When she was 21, Shoohada gave birth to her first child, and two years after that, she decided to focus on motherhood and family life full-time. She had always enjoyed reading however, and so she began to use some of her free time to write her own stories. Today a mother of six, Shoohada lives a busy life, splitting her days between her writing and her motherly responsibilities. She shares her home in the East End of London with her family, and anytime she has a moment to herself, she reads and writes. Someone who is immensely aware of the world around her, Shoohada maintains an active presence in the community, taking part both in fundraising and charity events. In 2013, Shoohada published her first picture book to great acclaim. Her mission is to inspire love and hope among people through her stories, both those that deal with her Muslim faith and those that do not. She plans on continuing to publish her stories for the foreseeable future.

Misbah Akhtar is a blogger, author, activist and mother of 4. She was born and bred in London and her passions include: photography, eating Wispa bars and finding inventive ways to tease her kids. She has a background in Psychology and English Literature, and is currently working towards becoming a life coach. She is the founder of Single Muslim Mums and Editor-in-chief of Mumspiration: her own personal transformational journey.
