So here is a story of Sr. Papatia Feauxzar on how she Quit her Corporate Job and chased/is chasing her dream on establishing a publishing house. Maa Shaa allah!
So Lets’ get started
Papatia Feauxzar an American author, barista, and publisher of West African descent living in Dallas, Texas with her son and husband. She holds a master’s degree in Accounting with a concentration in Personal Finance. After working as an accountant for a corporate firm for almost five years, Feauxzar decided to pursue Accounting from home while homeschooling her son. Assalaam ‘alaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh Sister. Welcome to our AMS community and thank you very much for the time you are going to spend with us in this short series “Mommies around me.
Papatia Fauxzar : Wa aleikum salam waramatulahi wabarakatuhu Sister, thank you for having me.
I have heard a lot about you and have collaborated with you in one project earlier, but you are new to my audience so let’s break the ice! Can you introduce about yourself please.
Papatia Feauxzar : Sure thing! I’m many things alhamdullilah. However, I like to sum it as I’m a Mom, an Accountant, and a Publisher.
The thing which attracted me towards you is your name. Being an Asian, I wasn’t able to associate if it’s a real name or a Pen name. Can you share with us the meaning of this name and if it’s a pen name how did you derive it.
Papatia Feauxzar : Papatya simply means “Daisy” in Turkish. My in-laws are Turks and they like to call me with this name. Feauxzar is just a combination of two syllables from maiden name and my married name. Since I also have a French heritage, I gave my pen name a “French Look.”
I am pretty sure you have a lot of stuffs in your plate like a mother, blogger, homeschooler, author, businesswoman, etc., so how do you manage your time? Can you share your tips to manage the time effectively?
Papatia Feauxzar : I have a planner to help me organize myself. It helps a lot! I was a great planner in my younger life because I always stuck to my “Emploi du temps” in school. Then in my teenage life, I ditched planning thinking I didn’t need it anymore; I have a great memory. After having a kid (Mommy brain) and starting to run a business, I realized I need to go back to my roots; re-become a planner freak! lol
Why did you plan to quit your job and start working from home and how did you decide on opening a publishing house?
Papatia Feauxzar : A woman needs her own money; it will save her lots of marital arguments. In other words, I wanted to remain an independent woman and experience many of the first of my young son. I was also tired to put up with the daily corporate BS as a triple minority… LOL!
Being a writer and a publisher is not a joke too much of work and effort has to be done. So you might have decided based on some inspiration if you don’t mind can you share with us the spark/inspiration which made you to decide on this track.
Papatia Feauxzar : My first published work is not my first penned work. The early works are no longer available; they are either lost and burned. Anyway, I am a sucker for romance but I couldn’t find one with a Muslim protagonist that looked like me or who was Muslim. I have read many romance novels in my teenage years back in Africa. In the US, I have read even more. I also read E.L.James works. The first trilogy was alright, plot wise. Her recent work, “The Mister” is better. So, whatever I felt was lacking in all these books to make them relatable to me and people of my faith, I included in “Mistress of the Spices.”
As a bossmom, what’s your dream? To be more specific your long-term goal!
Papatia Feauxzar : I want Allah to add more barakat and rizq in my current businesses so they can be a source of support for my legacy insha’Allah.
Alhamdulilah, you have reached a level in this entrepreneur journey. This means you would have faced a lot of hurdles, challenges so please do share with us what are the hurdles/challenges you received and how did you overcome it?
Papatia Feauxzar : It’s hard to pinpoint one thing in particular. But whenever I am faced with a difficult challenge, I pray first on it, and I go on damage control mode because the spill is here now, and it needs to be handled. I continue to make heartfelt dua and seek forgiveness from Allah to help me through the test. And before I know it, things clear. Like the Asian proverb says, “This too shall pass.” It’s hard not to stress but it’s good to remind oneself that everything is temporary. Holding unto duas and these thoughts, help me navigate my challenges better.
Most important amongst all how do you maintain the balance between personal life and work life.
Papatia Feauxzar : I don’t mix the two. I keep them SEPARATE. Have a mood and sign that stops from intruding in your play time. It’s necessary for you to recharge.
Staying focused is hard and being a mumin we know better about it. What are the precautions you take from getting distracted?
Papatia Feauxzar : I test my heart openness to the unseen. If I feel distant from Allah, I know I have been distracted with worldly affairs too long. I resume to any dhikr or tahajjud sessions I may have missed.
Maa shaa allah I get inspired with the flow of information you give us!
As a Muslim ummah, how does Islam impact your entrepreneurship?
Papatia Feauxzar : Islam is at the center of my businesses. Allah is The Giver of all things. Every successful person in dunya is a worshiper of something. I worship Allah because He is My Creator. He has promised success to those who listen and act better. He is the source of EVERYTHING alhamdullilah. Other worship the devil, things, people, etc. May Allah always guides us, aameen.
For everyone there will be a productive time in a day. So when is yours?
Papatia Feauxzar : I’m very productive early in the morning; my brain is fresh, alert, and sharp alhamdullilah.
How do you deal with negative thoughts and bad days?
Papatia Feauxzar : I make duas to cast these thoughts away.
What are three best lessons which you have learned so far in this journey?
Papatia Feauxzar : Too many. But I can give you one lesson; Stay humble, speak only when necessary, and be frugal, Not cheap; frugal.
Where do you find the inspirations?
Papatia Feauxzar : Everywhere I go, I find some kind of inspiration. Especially, during my R&R time.
Can you share with us your best advice for an upcoming publisher or writer?
Papatia Feauxzar : It’s about rizq. Rizq is tricky and can be a multitude of things. It’s not only about money. It can be your numbers of likes. It can be the money you make from selling your books. It can be the number of followers you have. It can be becoming a one-time hit wonder. So be careful in wanting things for appearances sake that will eat at your rizq; the total VALUE of things Allah has decreed for you.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Papatia Feauxzar : You can make money on your books without it having any reviews. And you may have tons of reviews and then it’s not selling. Again, it comes down to rizq.
I am so glad that I was able to make this happen. You are an inspiration for more upcoming mompreuners!
Papatia Feauxzar : Ah, shukran! Thank you for the interview. Allahumma barik!
